Meet Kevin Waters
Kevin has worked as an independent garden centre consultant working with retailers, suppliers, DIY stores and trade organizations across the UK, Ireland, Europe, USA and Japan since 1995 and founded The Garden Works in 2001. He specializes in shop-floor activities…team motivation and development, product knowledge, display and merchandising and promotional activities.
He also works as gardening writer, broadcaster and presenter with the garden press, radio and television networks within the UK and Ireland.
He started working in garden centres part time at Barton Grange in the north of England whilst still at school when the industry was a mere epicotyl in the minds of a few visionary entrepreneurs. He went on to study horticulture at Merrist Wood studying under lecturers which included John Stanley and Ian Baldwin and at Pershore College of Horticulture where he attained a Master of Horticulture qualification.
With Barton Grange he went on to open and manage the very first chain of plant centres in DIY stores in the UK. From there he was employed as general manager of the garden centre at Wheatcroft Roses where he oversaw an increase in sales of over 650% over an 8 year period. This was followed by 3 years with the Jardinerie chain (which is now part of The Garden Centre Group) before branching out on his own.
Since 1995 Kevin has worked as an independent consultant concentrating on supporting major garden retailers with specialized training and promotional programmes.
For fun (roughly translated as unpaid labour!) he and his partner run a smallholding growing a couple of tons of potatoes every year along with a selection of other vegetables plus a fruit garden with 70+ apple trees alongside an assortment of pears, cherries, raspberries, currants and strawberries.
His long term ambition is to reclaim and re-generate their 3 hectares (roughly 10 acres) of woodland which has been neglected for many years and return it to a condition that may be enjoyed by many generations to come.
His biggest regret is that he is not two years older….in which case he might just have been old enough to see the inimitable Jimi Hendrix live in concert before his sad and untimely demise.
